Brake disc condition check

 

Below are the common symtoms that you could experience when having trouble with your brakes. WEAR

When the disc wears, it becomes less efficient at dissipating heat, which in turn affects the performance. Embossed on the edge of the disc you will find the minimum operating thickness. When the disc reaches this thickness, they must BOTH be replaced, even if only one is worn. If the disc is ventilated, you should check for uneven wear either side of the vents. If this is the case, you need to check the operation of the calipers.

CRACKING

The disc is subject to continued brake applications as it wears and this can result in cracking. Any disc which is cracked, no matter how small, MUST be replaced immediately as it is dangerous.

CORROSION

A disc which has corroded prematurely is a possible sign that another part of the braking system is not operating correctly. You should also check for a build up of rust on the rim of the disc. Rear discs are more prone to corrosion than the front. Rear calipers become slack and can be affected by poor control valve performance and these should also be checked.

SCORING

If the surface of the brake disc is scored or scratched in any way, this will decrease the brake’s efficiency so should be replaced. You should also check the condition of the pads for any sign of foreign material between the pads and the disc surface.

BLUEING

Blueing is an indication of excessive heat being generated and the shades of discolouration range from straw to deep blue. If this is the case, you should check the operation if the calipers and the pads. Once this has happened, the discs are distorted and their efficiency will be reduced.
