Brake Disc Condition

When you are experiencing a problem with your brakes, you may notice some of the following symptoms. If you have noticed any of the below, Mr Clutch Autocentres will be able to diagnose the fault with your vehicle and either repair or replace the necessary parts of your braking system.

Wear

When the disc wears it becomes less efficient at dissipating heat which, in turn, affects the performance. Either on the brake disc or in your vehicle manual, you will find the minimum operating thickness that the discs should be. When the disc reaches this thickness, they must both be replaced even if only one is worn.

Cracking

If the disc is subject to continued brake applications as it wears over time, this can result in cracking. Any disc which is cracked, no matter how small the crack, must be replaced immediately to avoid brake failure.

Corrosion

A disc which has corroded prematurely is a possible sign that another part of the braking system is not operating correctly. Corrosion can also cause a build up of rust on the disc's rims. Rear discs are more likely to corrode than the front. It is necessary for the callipers of your vehicle to also be inspected by a technician when corrosion is noticed as they may have become slack.

Scoring

If the surface of the brake disc is scored or scratched in any way, this will decrease the brake's efficiency so should be replaced.

Blueing

Blueing is an indication of excessive heat being generated; the shades of discolouration range from straw like to deep blue. Similar to corroded discs, it is important to check the condition of the callipers and pads.
