But knowing these things can help you to manage your vehicle more efficiently, saving you time and money in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does air conditioning work in cars?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simplest explanation is that your car\u2019s air conditioning system cools air as it flows through the system and out into your car &#8211; but how does it do this? It relies upon a refrigerant substance &#8211; R1234yf for the newest cars and R134a for older models. Whichever refrigerant your car uses, the air con system manipulates the pressure and temperature within the system to change the refrigerant from a liquid to a gas, absorbing heat from the surroundings. This cools the nearby air, which is then pushed out into your cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gaseous refrigerant is then transferred through the rest of the system, further away from the cabin, where it cools back into a liquid state, and the process goes round and round to give you a constant supply of cooler air in your car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As mentioned, pressure is an integral part of your car\u2019s air conditioning process, which is why it\u2019s so important for the system to be sealed. If there\u2019s a leak anywhere in the system, it could result in a loss of pressure which prevents the refrigerant from heating and cooling as it should, reducing the cooling capabilities of the system as a whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of that, it\u2019s the refrigerant that acts as the cooling substance, so without it, your air con would be useless. This is why it\u2019s vital to have your air con regassed at regular intervals to keep it working optimally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Does air conditioning in a car use fuel?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can imagine, it takes power to heat and cool the refrigerant in your car\u2019s air conditioning system. The air con uses up fuel to power this process, which could make a noticeable difference to your fuel bills depending on your air con usage. For this reason, it\u2019s a good idea to think about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrclutch.com\/blog\/how-to-use-air-conditioning-in-the-car\/\">how you use your air conditioning<\/a>, as comparing the impacts of having the windows open on fuel efficiency compared to having the air con on can help you to decide which is better for your finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if you do choose to have the air con on, there are ways you can reduce the amount of fuel used. For example, if you\u2019re going somewhere on a hot day, it can be helpful to sit stationary with the windows and doors open for a few minutes before you set off to allow the hot air that\u2019s built up inside the car to escape. That way, when you start driving and turn on the air con, you\u2019ll be cooling the car down from an already lower temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also true that keeping up with air conditioning maintenance will help to save on fuel. Whether your refrigerant levels are dropping a little low or your system is clogged with debris and dust, failing to maintain the system can result in conditions that impact the efficiency of the air con system. When it\u2019s less efficient, it\u2019ll use more fuel to achieve the same cooling effect &#8211; essentially wasting fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a general rule, it\u2019s recommended to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrclutch.com\/air-conditioning-recharge\">have your air con regassed<\/a> every two years, and this is a good opportunity to have the system cleaned as well. Your vehicle handbook may have guidelines that are specific to your make and model, so check there for additional guidance &#8211; and if you\u2019re not sure how long it\u2019s been, then the vehicle service history may have that information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do all cars have air conditioning?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These days, air conditioning comes as standard in the vast majority of new cars &#8211; you\u2019d probably find it much harder to buy a car that <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> have an air con system. However, there are plenty of older cars on the road, and some of these may lack air conditioning simply because it wasn\u2019t standard when the car was manufactured. As a rough guideline, the older the car is, the less likely it is to have air conditioning &#8211; but of course the number of cars without air conditioning is decreasing all the time as older cars are scrapped and replaced with newer models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your vehicle handbook should be able to tell you whether or not your car has air conditioning if you don\u2019t already know, but if you\u2019re at all uncertain, you can always take your car to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrclutch.com\/branches\">your local autocentre<\/a> and ask for their advice.
