Whether you\u2019ve noticed some problems with your car\u2019s power system or you just want to check it on a regular basis, testing your car battery is a good way to keep an eye on its health. It\u2019s something you can do at home with the right equipment – but if you\u2019re at all unsure, you can also take your car into your local Mr Clutch autocentre<\/a> and we\u2019ll do it for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to test a car battery with a multimeter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The best way to test your car\u2019s battery at home is to use a device called a multimeter. This measures the electrical voltage of a car battery, allowing you to check to see whether or not it\u2019s within what\u2019s deemed a \u2018healthy\u2019 range. Multimeters can be bought online or in the car maintenance sections of many shops. Different multimeters can take different measurements, so make sure you get one marked with a DC or DCV for direct current voltage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One important thing to remember is that timing is everything when it comes to testing your car battery. If you test it after a drive, it\u2019s likely that the battery will give off a misleading higher reading than it would if it had been at rest. Because of this, it\u2019s recommended that you should wait until the car has been stationary for at least an hour to allow the battery to settle. Leaving it for longer, such as overnight, will only make your readings more accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you get started\u2026 <\/strong>Testing your car battery might seem like an everyday DIY task, but it can be dangerous. This is a process that naturally involves electrical currents and exposed terminals, so only carry it out if you\u2019re confident you know exactly what to do. If in doubt, take your car to an autocentre and let the professionals handle things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To test your car\u2019s battery, you\u2019ll need to open the bonnet and find the battery\u2019s terminals. If necessary, set the multimeter to measure direct current voltage, and turn the dial to 20 – this allows you to measure the voltage of the battery accurately between 0 and 20V, which should be all you need. Then touch the red probe to the positive terminal of the battery, and the black probe to the negative. The screen on the multimeter should show you a figure such as 12.6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Important! <\/strong>If the figure reads as a negative number (e.g. -12.6), this means you\u2019ve got the probes the wrong way around. Double check and try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned, if any of this sounds too complex or time-consuming, you can get a professional mechanic to do the job for you at a garage or autocentre. As well as being potentially harmful to you, testing the battery incorrectly could damage the internal electrical workings of your vehicle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reputable autocentres can test your battery for you quickly and easily, with all the expertise and specialist diagnostic equipment to hand to make spotting problems or faults simple. Even if you\u2019re happy to test the battery yourself regularly, it can be worthwhile to have it done professionally every year or so to get expert eyes on your car battery. And if you notice anything amiss before, during or after testing your car battery, don\u2019t hesitate to bring it to an autocentre for further investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What should your car battery voltage be?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When resting, your car\u2019s battery should have a voltage of 12.6 or slightly higher at 12.7. This essentially means that the car is 100% charged and ready to go. If the voltage is 12.2 or lower, the battery is around 50% charged, so you should give it a charge to get it back up to 100%. Below 12V, the battery is classed as discharged, which may cause problems with starting the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the reading is anywhere below 12.6V, then it\u2019s a good idea to charge your car battery<\/a> using a quality charger. Then let the battery rest overnight, and test it again in the morning. If the battery gives a reading of 12.6V or higher, then it\u2019s likely all it needed was a charge. If the reading is still lower than 12.6V, then that suggests there\u2019s a problem either with the battery or the charger. Your best bet is to take your car in for a battery diagnostics test<\/a> to locate any problems and receive expert advice from a trained mechanic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to check car battery health without a multimeter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t have a multimeter to hand, you may be wondering whether it\u2019s possible to test a car battery without one. While there are warning signs of a bad battery that you can take note of, there\u2019s no reliable method to check battery health without a multimeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take a look at an example to see why. Say you\u2019re going out in the morning, but your car isn\u2019t starting. It\u2019s true that this could indicate a problem with the battery, so should you rush off to replace your car battery<\/a>? No, because there are other things it could be, too. The issue could be in the ignition or the alternator, or perhaps there\u2019s a problem with the engine that\u2019s stopping the car from starting. It could even be as simple as a temporary fault caused by cold weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of this, it\u2019s important not to jump to conclusions when you suspect a problem with your car\u2019s battery. Whether you own a multimeter or not, the best thing you can do is take the car to a garage or autocentre to be checked over by a qualified mechanic.
