However, with prices raising throughout the month of August, and with families left with no other option but to bring their kids along with them for the summer holidays, there is no wonder many of us are now thinking about taking a staycation instead.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cstaycation\u201d term first became popular back in 2009 when the global economic crisis was at its peak. That time, holiday makers opted to stay either at home or at a nearby attraction rather than going abroad. According to latest research, the staycation is still going strong.<\/p>\n<p>Findings in a recent survey suggest 46% of motorists are planning to bring their car along on holiday this year. Last year, in 2014, there was an estimate of about 13.2 million cars used during domestic holidays in the UK alone. This is not something that is surprising since the UK can offer a lot. Among the most popular destinations are Sussex &amp; Dorset, Cornwall and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>It is surprising, however, that a lot of motorists admitted that they usually do not check their vehicles before heading out on a journey. Even though they had to travel long distances, these motorists do not even check the pressure of their tyres. More than half of them also failed to make sure that the tyre tread passed the standard limit. As a matter of fact, about 9% of the motorists do not check at all.<\/p>\n<p>Encountering a breakdown along the way is not a fun way to start your staycation trip. If you do not check your vehicle first before setting on your trip, there are a lot of risks that you have to take. In order to avoid all of these problems, here are the top basic checks that you need to do before leaving home:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check all lights and make sure they are working<\/li>\n<li>Check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrclutch.com\/blog\/how-and-why-you-should-check-your-coolant-regularly\/\">coolant levels<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Ensure that the brake fluid is good<\/li>\n<li>Check the dip stick. Top up the engine oil if needed.<\/li>\n<li>Refill screen wash bottle<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that you have enough tyre tread on all of the tyres. The legal limit in the<\/li>\n<li>UK is a minimum of 1.6mm.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that the battery terminals are tight and nice. Make sure they are not corroded.<\/li>\n<li>Consider booking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrclutch.com\/car-servicing\">service<\/a> if your car has not been serviced yet for a while.<\/li>\n<li>Turn the windscreen wipers on and make sure that the wiper blades are in a good working condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If there is any problems or doubts, make sure that you have you car checked first by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrclutch.com\/contact\">Mr Clutch<\/a>.
