With busy schedules abound, it can be easy to forget about anything that isn\u2019t demanding your attention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, this can lead to missing key maintenance tasks that could make your vehicle more susceptible to damage or breakdown. Below, we explore the role of the gearbox<\/a> and why it\u2019s so crucial to the smooth running of your car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a gearbox?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Also sometimes referred to as a part of the \u2018transmission\u2019, a gearbox is a mechanical component of your vehicle that transmits the power generated by the engine to the wheels of the car. Essentially, it\u2019s the connecting part between the energy-generator and the energy-user. If your gearbox is faulty, it could prevent you from going anywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In reality, it\u2019s a little bit more complicated than that, because the gearbox is only one of several components that perform this transmission of power. In most vehicles, this function involves the gearbox, the clutch, the prop shaft, the differential and the final drive shaft. These components are located in and around the engine to make the transfer of energy as efficient as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does a gearbox work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The exact workings of the gearbox differ depending on the kind of transmission your car uses – manual or automatic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manual transmission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A manual gearbox is usually located between the engine and the clutch<\/a>. There are slight variations between gearboxes, but in most cases, the following applies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. You push the clutch pedal down, which separates the engine from the transmission system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. You choose a gear with the gear lever. This connects to a selector rod which engages the appropriate gear. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. You raise the clutch, which connects the engine to the transmission again, this time in the chosen gear. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Most manual cars have at least six gears – reverse and first through to fifth. Some cars have a sixth gear, and others still have even more, but this is rarer. Each gear has its own capabilities, with the lower gears offering more torque (turning power) and the higher ones providing more speed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So, by facilitating gear changes, the manual transmission system allows you to choose the capabilities you need to tackle the driving surface, whether that\u2019s a steep hill or a long, clear motorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Automatic transmission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    One of the most obvious differences for many people between manual and automatic transmission is that automatic vehicles don\u2019t have a gear stick and clutch in the same way a manual does. As the name suggests, the vehicle automatically changes gear without your input – but how?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Essentially, automatic transmissions use sensors to pick up on when it\u2019s time to change gear. Without a clutch pedal, it has to have another way of disengaging the engine from the transmission. It does this using something called a torque converter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In simple terms, a torque converter directs rotational power from one component to the next, and by disconnecting the engine from the transmission, it performs much the same function as a manual transmission\u2019s clutch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Next, it\u2019s time to engage the correct gear for the situation – but an automatic transmission doesn\u2019t have a different wheel for each gear like a manual transmission does. Instead, they have what are known as planetary or epicyclic gears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These gears are called planetary because they consist of a circular gear within which several smaller \u2018planet\u2019 gears orbit around a central \u2018sun\u2019 gear. This allows for a greater number of connection combinations within a smaller space when compared to a manual transmission – automatic gearboxes are often more compact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So, instead of selecting the correct gear wheel to engage with the engine, an automatic transmission will identify and put in place the correct combination of gears within the planetary system to achieve the same goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If all of this sounds quite complicated, that\u2019s because the internal workings of a gearbox – whether manual or automatic – are complex and intricate. For this reason, it\u2019s highly recommended that you don\u2019t attempt any repairs or replacements yourself, as it can be easy to cause damage or make a mistake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Within such a complex system, it\u2019s hugely important that everything runs smoothly, which is why things can start to go wrong if there isn\u2019t enough lubrication. That\u2019s why it\u2019s vital to keep your gearbox oil at an appropriate level – if the gears grind against each other without oil to smooth their passage, damage becomes more likely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    With all this in mind, the best thing you can do to take care of your vehicle\u2019s transmission and avoid damage is to get your car checked and serviced regularly by a qualified mechanic at your local autocentre<\/a>.
