Coronavirus COVID-19 Lockdown and MOTs

There has been a lot of stress and confusion over the past few months, but now that the government restrictions on lockdown are being eased and we are getting back to work, our cars are also coming out of the garage and hitting the road. Of course, one thing we have all forgotten about during lockdown is the MOT on our vehicles. Now is the perfect time to check if it’s due, what the government policy is, and how you can get one done.

Do I Still Need an MOT During Lockdown?

Although the government has arranged a 6-month exemption for those who need an MOT from March 30th, 2020 – there are important rules that you must be aware of if you decide not get an MOT, which are detailed below.

Can I Get Away with No MOT During Coronavirus?

Yes and no. The government have been very clear in stating that despite the exemption for many road users, your vehicle must be kept in roadworthy condition to keep everyone safe. The government are clear that you can still be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

How Can I Check My Vehicle is Roadworthy?

The absolute best way to check that your vehicle is roadworthy is by having an MOT carried out. We’d therefore strongly advise that if you’re still using your vehicle, and therefore not shielding or isolating during this period, you still bring your vehicle in for an MOT.

According to the RAC, more than 1 in 10 MOT failures are caused by suspension issues, which can be hidden fairly well, and therefore very difficult for vehicle owners to identify themselves.

Can I Still Get an MOT During COVID-19 Lockdown?
